Effect of sepiolite on flame retardancy of ethylene propylene diene monomer

The effect of sepiolite content on the mechanical properties and flame retardancy properties of composites using ethylene propylene diene monomer(EPDM)as matrix were studied and compared with silica filler in this manuscript. The results showed that the mechanical properties of EPDM composites were obviously improved with the increasing amount of sepiolite, but not as good as that of silica. The oxygen index of EPDM composites increased, meanwhile the maximum heat release rate and total heat release decreased with the increasing amount of sepiolite. EPDM composites had excellent flame retardancy filled with sepiolite compared with silica.
