Vertreibung in drei Schritten. Hans Kelsens Netzwerk und die Anfänge österreichischer Politikwissenschaft
Abstract
Political science was not only expelled in times of Austrofascism or in the Nazi era but was in exile from the outset. The young discipline’s first refuge was the extramural exile of Vienna’s independent research institutions, the adult education movement and the private seminars as that of Ludwig Mises or Hans Kelsen in the 1920s. Focussing on Kelsen as a central character I analyse the careers of those early Austrian political scientists. By looking into their network that had helped them in the further stages of expulsion (within Europe and, ultimately in US-American exile) I point to the significance of social capital, moot the common typology of (forced) migration and try to bring in a new research aspect by recognising an already extramural exile.
