During the period between the Unification of Italy (1861) and the years preceding the First World War, Italian individuals and groups in Egypt, belonging to different secular currents, engaged in forms of “goodwill” completely opposite to those of the confessional charities and institutions. This is a plural and heterogeneous history in which different components of the Italian colony in Egypt participated, often in a competing manner. In this article, secular associations provide the ideal means of observing the reconstruction of social and political relationships within the Italian colony, and also relations between the colony and the metropolis, in a country subject to Capitulations and to various forms of colonial domination.
