Holy Mountains as the Space of Dialogue of Cultural Traditions
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study the Svyatogorsky Monastery in the aspect of cultural traditions interaction, relying on new data. Research methodology. The application of the hermeneutic method, the culturological approach, and the architectural and stylistic analysis contributed to the obtaining of the conclusions of this study. Results. Based on the new attributive, historical and cultural, art criticism data it is established that the architectural and stylistic transformation of the Transfiguration Church of Svyatogorsky monastery underwent twice: from the pseudo-Byzantine style (design) to the forms of Ukrainian folk wooden architecture (project implementation) and further acquired the features of the typical project for the 19th (decoration and painting). For the first time, the author proposes two versions on the authorship of changes towards the Ukrainian folk tradition of the Transfiguration Church construction: the sisters Barbara and Sophia Lanskyis and the Kharkiv diocesan architect M.A. Kraevskiy. The obtained material also permits to talk about the dialogue of a number of cultural traditions in the space of the architectural complex Svyatogorye: official and popular culture; pan-Orthodox and national and religious; Western and Eastern Ukrainian architectural traditions; national-religious and state-ideological. The features of Ukrainian national culture turned out to be dominant in the art and culture of the region. Novelty. The paper suggests a new approach to the authors of stylistic transformations towards the Ukrainian architectural tradition in the project implementation of the Transfiguration Church of Svyatogorsk Monastery. The practical significance. The results of the research can be used for further research on the architecture and art of Ukrainian monasteries of the late 19th -early 20th centuries.
