The origin of Mishar Tatars and Teptyars in the work of G.N. Akhmarov

Abstract

The article discusses the origin of Tatars, including Mishars and Teptyars in the writings of G.N Akhmarov, who was a prominent Tatar historian and ethnographer at the beginning of the twentieth century. He was one of the first in the scholarly community to draw attention to multiplicity within the Tatar ethnic group. For the first time in the national historiography he put forward and substantiated a hypothesis about the origins of Mishar Tatars. Moreover, his research on the historical roots of the Teptyars revealed that they are an integral part of the Tatar ethnicity. The term “Teptyar” as used in modern historiography was advanced by G.N. Akhmarov at the beginning of the twentieth century.
