Surimpressions : l’administration particulière des Indiens et les diverses configurations de l’esclavage indigène dans l’Amérique portugaise du XVIIe siècle
Abstract
This article addresses the problem posed by Indian slavery in Brazil during the dynastic union of the crowns of Portugal and Castile (1580-1640). Indian slavery was then generally banned in Spanish America, but still practiced throughout Portuguese America. The exploration of the contexts of Indian slavery in Brazil will lead us to examine, in particular, the phenomenon of the particular administration of the Indians, which developed during this period. The study of the interactions that surround this practice, whether local, Atlantic, or imperial, will make it possible to open a dialogue between the different sides of Portuguese America.
