The present work aims to clarify the political organization of Punic Sicily under the direct domination (eparchy) of Carthage. It first examines our knowledge concerning the administration of the African metropolis from its foundation until the institution of the annual magistracy of the suffetes around the 5th century B.C. It then analyses the nature and functioning after 374 B.C. of the eparchy of Carthage in western Sicily. This is based on the extant epigraphic data and, above all, on the local coin legends that mention officials, military bodies and territories dependent on the African city.
