Un chemin de Damas ? Le Parti socialiste et les chrétiens dans les années 1970
Abstract
For most of the 20th century, French Socialists were deeply influenced by “laïcité”, or militant secularism, that was to become a cornerstone of their identity. They were cautious, even reluctant, to share common grounds with the “progressive Christians”, a small minority that had emerged from the catholic community in the fifties. As the Parti socialiste turned into a major political force, the arrival of progressive Christians sparked internal controversies. While the party presented itself as a “catch-all party”, catholic militants often encountered several forms of defiance, ranging from irony to open hostility.
