Traditionally, the headline reflects the main information about the content of the publicistic text. The headline, considered as a special grammatical model, is characterized by a variety of multifunctional syntactic structures. Purpose. This article is devoted to the analysis of functions implemented by various syntactic models of headlines. The headlines in Russian journal Russkij Reporter (Russian reporter) are the subject of the analysis. The choice of news reports headlines as a research material allows to analyse the functions of syntactic structures of headlines in a new way. Method or methodology of the work. The basis of the article is formed by the method of continuous sampling in the selection of practical material, the descriptive method of linguistic-stylistic analysis, as well as the method of quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results. The results of the study showed that the syntactic features of the news report headlines are multifaceted and diverse. Journalists use various syntactic means to make the headline more emotional and expressive. The presentation frequency of word-combination headlines and one-member-sentence headlines (the ones of the kind of simple structures) is much higher than the presentation frequency of simple two-part-sentence headlines, which indicates the functional saturation, i.e. multifunctionality of simplified syntactic structure of the news report. The conciseness of the headline, specifics of its syntactic structure helps to draw the reader’s interest to the advertising discourse. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used in theoretical courses on the Russian language stylistics, as well as in special courses on the discourse of the modern Russian press.
