Instagram, one of the cause of English word invasion in Serbian language used by young people
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to examine the influence of English language on Serbian through social networking services, in this case Instagram, at the spelling and lexical levels. Through a pilot survey, an analysis was made based on a corpus of ten texts from different users over a period of one month, detailed in the results. The research started with the assumption that the influence of the English language and the hybridization of the Serbian language under that influence would be demonstrated. The results of the analysis are described and conclusions are drawn based on the analysis of the obtained results. The study found that the greatest influence of the English language was observed at the level of the lexis of the Serbian language in terms of overuse of Anglicisms and the creation of new forms of words influenced by the English language, but it was not absent at the level of spelling. Having conclusion of this paper, we have provided suggestions for possible measures that could be implemented to prevent the invasion of English words, as well as changes in the Serbian language that are unfounded and unjustified.
