O movimento sindical nos casinos em Portugal, 1925-1974
Abstract
The history of trade unionism in Portuguese casinos has always been structured by the existence of tips. Contrary to what happens in most professional contexts, wages never represented the main remunerative component of dealers. Rather than a unitary struggle for wages, the union dynamics of Portuguese casinos were always characterized by the fragmented struggle for the appropriation of tips. This article, based on archival research, seeks to understand how the existence of tips influenced the dynamics of trade unionism in Portuguese casinos, in contrast with the hospitality sector, which was also highly dependent on tips.
