Introduction: Teeth whitening is one of the most requested treatments by people who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their teeth, without taking into account that these whitening agents cause side effects after treatment. Objective: determine which is the best desensitizing agent that can be applied to reduce sensitivity for tooth whitening. Method: a systematic review was carried out based on a search in the ElSevier, PubMed and Scielo databases for articles on desensitizing methods used in dental whitening. As selection criteria, studies carried out in the last 10 years, in adults, that address desensitizing methods and report on dental whitening and sensitivity were accepted. Results: A total of 68 documents were reviewed, 48 studies were excluded based on the title, 7 based on the information found in the abstract, and 3 after reading the full text articles. Finally, 10 studies were included. Conclusions: to prevent dentin hypersensitivity after dental whitening treatment, it is possible to opt for the use of Nano-hydroxyapatite and the combination of fluoride varnish according to the preference of the operator and adaptability of the dental organs.
