Preparation and characteristics of Ti-Co / Zr-Co based NEG materials
Abstract
Two series of nanocrystalline inter-metallic alloys (Ti1-x-Cox and Zr1-x-Cox) were prepared with different concentrations (x = 0.36, 0.32, 0.28, 0.24, 0.20 in steps of 0.04 decreasing order). These materials were characterized by using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermo-gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) techniques. XRD studies confirm the formation of cubic (body-centered cubic) spinel structures. The TGA and DSC revealed the presence of temperature-dependent endothermic and exothermic behaviour. The sorption behaviour of these getter materials in a nitrogen environment has been carried out to understand the absorption/adsorption nature of the materials. Obtained SEM photographs and EDS exposed the variations of morphological structures and average grain size distributions lying between 15 and 18μm. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) results corroborated the obtained particle size values evaluated by XRD and SEM measurements. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have been performed for surface analysis of the present materials and to understand chemical modification on the surface of the getter material.
