Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, which occurs as a consequence of defects in the action of insulin on its receptor, in insulin secretion, or in both. Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with long-term damage, dysfunction, and failure of different organs, especially eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels. It is a disease that has reached epidemic proportions. The latest edition of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Atlas shows that 463 million adults are currently living with DM and it is estimated that there will be 578 million adults with DM by 2030 and 700 million by 2045. The prevalence of DM ( in adults aged 20-79 years) in Central and South America was 8.5% in 2019 and it is expected that by 2030 it will be 9.5 and 9.9% by 2045.
