This study interrogates the dramatic production of the seventeenth century Spanish playwright Álvaro Cubillo de Aragón to determine the strategies he employs, outside of the customary metaphors and similes, to evoke visually symbolic imagery in the imaginations of his spectators. Cubillo’s plays tend to have a very simple staging, and are generally devoid of those special effects common in Golden Age plays to delight the eye. The categories analyzed include anecdotes and fables, proverbs and refrains, and emblematic images.
