Animal welfare and legislation. The challenge facing the human consumption of animals in Mexico
Abstract
In this paper we examine the conflict between animals destined for human consumption and animal welfare in Mexico. We particularly analyze the intention to reform different articles of the Federal Law to Animal Health and the Federal Criminal Code published on March 28, 2017 in the official newspaper of the Federal Congress which include the addition of animal cruelty as a crime at the federal level and the extension of the sanction for transgressions of zoosanitary provisions related to the slaughter of animals for human consumption. We conclude that it is necessary to carry out transversal public welfare policies to benefit the conditions of the non-human animals against anthropogenic activities as a tool for abolitionism and biodiversity conservation.
