Tras las huellas de George Lefebvre. Tucumán en las guerras de independencia: rumores alarmistas, noticias falsas y temores compartidos

Abstract

From three cases of rumors circulating in the province of Tucumán, we will analyze the linkage of the alarming news with a state of exaltation in the population, during the first years of the revolution, within a framework of uncertainty that had singular impact in this province by its character of camping of the “Ejército Auxiliar del Perú”.In a fertile but little explored historiographical field, and following some of the guidelines from the "great fear of 1789" by George Lefebvre, the present work approaches the characteristics of the rumor in this peripheral space with respect to the city of Buenos Aires, but central to the war.The present work maintains that the rumors constitute a fundamental key to observe the forms of access to political participation. Often related to mobilization, but also to shared fears, their propagation caused the immediate reaction of political-military authorities and constructed alternative channels that influenced the course of politics.
