Purpose. The aim of the study was to describe various forms of secondary changes in area of the lens capsule after phacoemulsification with implantation of different types of IOLs.Material and methods. The study was conducted by a continuous study in 673 patients after phacoemulsification with implantation of different IOL types performed at the private eye center «Vostok-Prozrenie». The study included 409 female and 264 male patients. The age of patients ranged from 25 to 87 years (67.2±12.1 years). Conventional clinical ophthalmological examinations were carried out in all patients. The postoperative follow-up was up to 5 years.Results. Totally there were identified 70 cases of changes in the posterior lens capsule (PCO) (10.4%). The period of changes detection in the posterior lens capsule after phacoemulsification surgery varied from 6 months to 5 years.Conclusion. We describe the main types of secondary alterations of the posterior capsule of the lens after the implantation of modern IOL types. The obtained information can help surgeons to select an optimal IOL type and an approach to the prevention of secondary alteration of the capsular bag-IOL area. It is revealed that the liquefied lens bag is a complication easily eliminated using the YAG-laser puncture and the subsequent posterior capsulotomy.
