Viaggiare, ossia emigrare. Sul motivo del viaggio nella Festa del ritorno di Carmine Abate
Abstract
The article focuses on the analysis of the theme of the journey in the novel Festa del ritorno and it identifies it as an overriding one with respect to others appearing in the work. It is exactly the journey of the protagonist – cyclical in its nature – that the whole text is centred in. In order to support his relatives, Tullio is forced to leave his hometown village of Hora, located in Calabria and inhabited by a small community of Arbëresh, and sets off to France. The article analyses the influence of the journey on the life of the main character and on his relationship with his son. The journey causes a consciousness crisis in Tullio, who becomes more and more distant from his beloved child. The protagonist, together with many other characters appearing in the works which belong to the genre of the Italian migration literature, becomes an exiled destined to live in a foreign country.
