The process of development of heat engines, their types, modifications, problems encountered on this way and ways to overcome them are considered. The creative search of engineers, scientists, and practitioners who operated heat engines (from the moment of their appearance to the present day) is described. The last tendencies of the ХХ–ХХI centuries, when small two-stroke internal combustion engines (ICE), which were used both in stationary form for various power units (saws, scythes, pit drills) and in transportation (land, river, sea, light aviation), are considered in particular detail.
