“Por uma frente unida das vanguardas musicais latino-americanas”: a virada latino-americana no Festival Música Nova a partir do III Festival de Música de América y España
Abstract
In 1970, Brazilian composer Gilberto Mendes was invited to participate in the III Festival of Music from America and Spain in Madrid, which brought together composers from several countries of Latin America, in addition to the USA, Canada, and Spain. For Mendes, this festival was essential to establish a rapprochement between Latin American composers, more specifically between Brazilians and the Spanish-speaking countries, who, in his opinion, until that moment were little known. From that year on, there was an increase in the participation of Latin American composers in the Festival Música Nova, created by Gilberto Mendes in 1962 in Santos. Through the analysis of primary sources such as concert programs and testimonials, this work shows the importance of the Festival of Music from America and Spain in developing an integration project.
