CLIMATE CHANGE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN FARMERS AND ADAPTATION STRATEGIES IN AGROECOSYSTEMS OF THE MEXICAN SUB-HUMID TROPICS

Abstract

The comprehension of climate change among farmers in the Mexican sub-humid tropics is critical to becoming a social communication issue. This theoretical presumption guided the present research, whose objective was to understand the importance of communication on climate change regarding to its definition, the identification of impacts and the development of adaptation strategies by farmers from four localities of the central area of the state of Veracruz. This region is part of the Mexican sub-humid tropics. A survey and interviews in depth were conducted. As long as climate change does not become a social communication issue, farmers will not think of it as a threat. That is, there will be no conditions for farmers to design and implement medium and long-term adaptation strategies in their agroecosystems, either self-supported or with institutional help.
