Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous microorganism.Spores can be found in the air, soil, water and decomposing organic material. It causes severe life-threatening infections especially in immunocompromised patients. Great diversity of genotypes is characteristic for this microorganism. Using typing methods, relevant epidemiological data regarding the diversity and frequency of the strains can be obtained, which can be useful for determining the source of infection in outbreaks and ways for its prevention. This paper presents the most frequently used methods for genotyping of A. fumigatus, pointing out their advantages and disadvantages with a review of recent study results.
