The seaside village of Mahahual (located in the South of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico) has been impacted by the economic and social consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. This sanitary crisis has been having some repercussions on the economy of the tertiary sector; this village on the Caribbean coast works in majority thanks to tourism, in particularly with the cruise-ship industry. The 14th of mars 2020, the Costa Maya port announced that not a single boat would moor anymore; two weeks after the transmission of this information, the mayor proceeded to the temporary closure of the entrance of the village with the aim that no tourists and no one from outside the community may enter. Some adaptation strategies have been implemented by the tertiary workers and by the owners of tourism establishments; this unprecedented situation of “no tourism” builds some new exchanges spaces and solidarity – inside the community – that we will report in this article.
