Artistry in the Context of the Professional Training of a Student-Choirmaster

The aim of the article is to consider the artistry as a necessary component of choral conductor acting nowadays, to find out some features of the conductor’s artistry, to suggest some ways and methods of its development. Research methodology. The methodology is based on the interdisciplinary relationships between choir and theater studies, choreography, pedagogy and psychology. The main statements of the study are based on the different pedagogical and psychological studies, choir conducting and history of chorus performing and personal pedagogical experience. Results. The conductor’s artistry is a composite psycho-physical structure, which is based on the individual intellectual and spirit wealth of the personality. Future choirmaster is evolving during his studying under the condition of using special methods. The artistry consists of emotional and expressive movements, face expression, poses and glance. All of them can convey art intentions of the conductor. The student’s performing artistry improvement increases with the unity of the music, intellectual and psycho-physical evolution. The use of different elements of the actors’ techniques and choreography during the work on the performing artistry helps to enrich conductor’s impressiveness and his possibility to convey his art intense to the collective. Physical and emotional freedom, which are integral parts of a conductor’s work on his artistry and its improvement, help to get and transfer energy, that is very important for a conductor. The conductor’s artistry and the depth of his immersing into the music image depends on the level of the empathy, which is an indicator of the conductor’s mastery. Novelty. The study has enabled a better understanding of the mechanism of the artistry. New techniques of an application of the artistry in class are suggested by the author. The practical significance. The evidence from this study suggests a variety of options to apply the artistry in choir class with the students-choirmasters. The study is intended for the music masters, lecturers in music and choir art.
