The Cult of the Virgin of the Rosary in San Nicolás de los Arroyos (Argentina, 1983-2010): Miracle and Social Reconfiguration
Abstract
In the city of San Nicolás de los Arroyos (Argentina) a growing worship of the Virgin of the Rosary has developed since 1983. Its consolidation coincided with a moment of significant socio-economic transformations for the town. This article examines the history of this devotion focusing on two related aspects: the various agents involved and the identity reconfigurations that went along with its development. Through historic and ethnographic research, I explore the meanings attached to this cult and analyze how the religious symbol has operated within San Nicolás’s society.
