Approaches and perspectives on the independence and formation period of the State of Nuevo Reino de Granada, 1780-1816
Abstract
This article presents a synthesis of different approaches that historians and the authorraised in order to reinterpret the transition period between the old colonial regime and the birth of the republic in the Viceroyalty of New Granada. In particular, it is to insist on the need to restore the connection between the late colonial and republican period as a condition to understand the conflicts that break out in the early years of the founding of the nation. This connection with the late colonial will underline two central problems: the first of them is the relationship between territory and political transformations. There will be noted the impact of the colonial order of the territory on the conflicts inthe first republic and the difficulties of building a nation in a territory divided into multiple local authorities. Secondly, there will be noted the impact that the existence of a society of castes had in the process of building a new nation of citizens.
