This three-voice introduction aims at showing first that these conference proceedings were bound to be essentially interdisciplinary, at the crossroads of various art forms – music, theatre, dance, video and cinema – and thus of various scholarly disciplines and approaches – mainly cultural studies and gender studies. It also aims at providing two necessary kinds of contextualisation for Kate Bush’s œuvre : the artist’s place in the history of pop music and her place in British culture. Setting the stage for the more in-depth explorations in the various articles that follow, the introduction already uncovers and highlights the fundamentally plural and hybrid nature of the singer-songwriter-performer and her work, in terms of art forms, values and cultures.
