Frequency of Rotavirus Infection In Children With Acute Gastroenteritis

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Acute gastroenteritis, is a major cause of mortality and morbidity especially in children who live at developing countries. In this study, it was aimed to determine the frequency of rotavirus, who were referred to our hospital with the compliant of acute diarrhea. METHODS: This study has been performedwith children age 0-18 years old who applied to our hospital between January 2010 and December 2015. Stool samples which were taken immediately sent to the microbiology laboratory in sterile, closed containers. The results of the samples studied with the microelements method (Triturus-Biomerieux) were evaluated by chi-square analysis in the SPSS 13.0 statistical program. RESULTS: 55035 patients stool specimens were studied and 31842 patients (57.8%) were male. Rotavirus positivity was detected at 7783 (14.1%) of cases. 14.2% of the male patients were found to have the rotavirus, while this rate were 14.0% in the female. There was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of rotavirus in both genders. Rotavirus infection in children aged 1-6 years old were observed significantly more common than other age groups. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Rotavirus, which causes significant mortality and morbidity all over the world, is still high as 14%. We believe that an effective vaccination program may reduce rotavirus infection.
