Symposium 9: Comorbidities in the obese adolescent
Abstract
Early onset of obesity is associated with a higher probability of premature death and disability in adulthood. The risk of most diseases resulting from obesity depends, to some extent, on the age of onset and its duration. Large prospective studies have shown that pediatric obesity and poorly controlled cardiovascular risk factors contribute to the progression of atherosclerotic disease in adulthood. Obesity in adolescents and young adults is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy and geometric changes consistent with cardiac remodeling and decreased diastolic function. Dyslipidemia, hypertension, and alterations in carbohydrate metabolism are, in turn, cardiovascular risk factors.
