Abstract This study aimed to examine changes of territoriality in home and its theory, which was proposed in the 1990s, and to clarify changes of territoriality by comparing current and previous survey results. Our key findings can be summarized as follows: (1) The increase in the living room–dining room–kitchen‐type homes is remarkable, and the number of houses with guest rooms is decreasing; (2) there were many Matriarchal‐ and Patriarchal‐type homes in the past, but the number of Egalitarian‐type homes is significantly increasing; and (3) regarding the Egalitarian type, further focus can be placed on the parent–child relationship and two types can be distinguished.
