Problems of thoracic trauma: pulmonary contusion

Abstract

The review considers the problem of pulmonary contusion in the intensive care clinic. The frequency of pulmonary contusion in patients with isolated thoracic injuries, polytrauma and its influence on the course of the traumatic disease and the mortality rate are given. The leading pathophysiological mechanisms that take place in pulmonary contusion are discussed. Quantitative evaluation of the severity of thoracic trauma and lung injury are briefly considered. Modern measures of intensive care in patients with pulmonary contusion are highlighted, with an emphasis on the need for respiratory support. The importance of respiratory support for the survival of patients with pulmonary contusion and the auxi­liary value of pharmacological methods are emphasized.
