This paper is about the categories of "genius" and “intention” as related to the history of literary practices in the West. Starting with a chronicle by Nelson Rodrigues about the notion of genius in soccer, its flaws, errors and brilliant misunderstandings, we will question the possibility of authorial intentionality being considered today as one of the basic elements of literary investigation, using concepts referring to authorship and reception in literary studies.
