Abstract
Spatial distribution of urbanization and its change that reflecting to three time crosssections during Republican Period of Turkey is taking into consideration in this article. Census evidences in the years 1927,1960 and 2000 of State Institute of Statistics were evaluated. Urbanization in the developing countries, which were integrated into the industrialization process afterwards like Turkey, is the evidence that has a demografic character gained an acceleration starting from mid-twentieth century. This situation can be traced from increasing both in rates of urbanized population in total population and the number of urban settlements. Urbanization levels are seen as 71 % in 2000, 33 % in 1960 as it was 24 % in 1927. Urbanitaziton was rapidly spread spatially from western sides of the country to central and southern sides from 1927 to 2000. When Marmara and Agean regions previously were the conspicuous areas in view of urbanization, additionally, Central Anatolian and Mediterranean Regions were also estabilished rapid developments. Urban hierarchy,at the same time, was begun to shape in Turkey when urbanization was effectively distinguished itself in various regions. Another noticeable point in urbanization of Turkey is that the cities are not getting larger at the same rate. As soon as they are getting larger , increase in population shows more increases. As an annual average, small towns show 2-2,5 % of population increases, and 3.5% for middle-sized ones when larger cities show 4-5 % as for the cities above million populations, this figure reaches to 6 %. This situation shows that the urbanization in Turkey inclined to being metropolises. Together with this process, meanwhile, the fact of metropolitan-village is rapidly spreading
