INTRODUCTION: Patients satisfaction with nursing care is related an important factor in explaining patients perceptions of service quality many factors, including patient characteristics, can affect patients' satisfaction with treatment and care. The purpose of this study is to determine the satisfaction from nursing care of inpatients in the surgical clinics and the effect of patient characteristics on the phenomenon. METHODS: The universe of this qualitative, cross-sectional study consisted of adult patients receiving inpatient treatment in surgical clinics of a university hospital. The sample of the study consisted of 189 patients who accepted to participate in the research, were able to communicate, 18 of age and above and hospitalized for at least two nights. Data was collected during hospitalization through the self-report Newcastle Nursing Care Satisfaction Scale. In data evaluation, percentages, mean values, one way ANOVA, the independents groups t test, the Kruskal Wallis test and Pearson's Correlation Analysis was used. RESULTS: The main satisfaction score of the surgical patients regarding nursing care was found to be (65.76+-11.27) The highest satisfaction was in the field of respect to privacy (3.72+-0.86), while the lowest satisfaction was in the field of nurses making patients feel at home (3.15+-0.86). While no significant difference was found in satisfaction with regard to age, education level, marital status, social security, and previous hospital experiences (p>0.05), a significant difference was found with regard to gender (p=0.008). Additionally, a negative significant relationship between hospitalization duration and satisfaction was found (p=0.007). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Study findings have shown that surgical patients were satisfied with nursing care on a moderate level. Additionally, the results of this study showed that females were more satisfied with care compared to males, and that hospitalization duration negatively affected the satisfaction perception of patients.
