Like many other borders or former borders in Central and Eastern Europe, the de facto border between Transnistria and the rest of Moldova (from which it seceded in 1990) results in the reactivation of a former imperial border. The Soviet period was structuring for the discordance of the trajectories between the two sides of the Dniester, the phantom border having been actively maintained in the management of territories. Although not recognized, this border nowadays constitutes a real political boundary between two state sovereignties. The crises disturbing the region since the beginning of the 21st century contribute to reinforcing this border rather than erasing it.
