Abstract

This paper examines the common patterns of inheritance in the villages in Serbia from the perspective of social position of women and their subordination with regard to inheritance relations over time. The paper shows the way the Serbian Civil Code regulated the position of women regarding inheritance, as well as the socialist legislation that equalized the position of women and men regarding the right of inheritance. In addition to documentation and legal regulations, the paper shall also rely on the results of the research of inheritance relations and customs, conducted in different parts of Serbia. This paper focuses on the restrictions on women’s right to inherit their parents’ legacy in everyday rural life.
