Augmenting the wear performance of epoxy composites by different fillers: Synthesis of highly crystalline g-C3N4 by simple pyrolysis and recycling of carbon fibres from old aircraft composites
Abstract
During recent years, application of epoxy resin in wear prone applications have increased a lot due to their light weight, low friction, less wear loss, corrosion resistance, ability to conform under load, etc. The present investigation is done to enhance the tribological performance of epoxy composites reinforced with different fillers. Carbon nitride (C3N4) is one of the hardest materials known and hence it was expected that it will improve the properties of epoxy resin. The attempt of adding C3N4 to epoxy matrix was successful, whereas different fillers like glass fibre and recycled carbon fibres were also incorporated for comparison. The carbon fibres were recycled by two methods; viz. chemically and thermally, from used aircrafts composites. A comparative study was done to investigate the best filler in epoxy for minimum wear loss and maximum hardness. C3N4 reinforced composites performed exceptionally well, improving the wear resistance by approx. 25% compared to virgin epoxy.
