Highlights Levels of the inflamma-miR-181a correlate with multimorbidity burden in older people. MiR-181a levels correlate with blood inflammation markers in a gender-specific manner. MiR-181a is positively correlated with age in males but not in females. The paths by which miR-181a can influence health status likely differ between genders.
