Edward Piekarski (1858–1934) i jego Słownik jakucki (1907–1930)
Abstract
Edward Piekarski (1858–1934) and His Yakut dictionary (1907–1930) World’s first, and still unsurpassed, dictionary of the Yakut language was written by a Polish exile in Yakutia by the name of Edward Piekarski. His life has been analysed in several studies from Poland, be it often superficially and without own work in the archives, but his dictionary has hardly been addressed at all. The present paper collects biographic information from various sources, highlighting the discrepancies between them, and for the first time in linguistic literature analyses Piekarski’s views on the transcription of Yakut phonetics with an alphabet contrived by Otto von Böhtlingk about half a century before the creation of the Dictionary.
