Abstract

The bouddhist ceremony of the tenth lunar month, dedicated to the dead and the hungry ghosts, is a paramount feature in the region of Phang Nga, Southern Thailand. Its importance and role go well beyond its religious meaning. Indeed, it is a ritual ensemble which, by overlapping with the vegetarien festival of the Sino-Thais and with ceremonises held by the Sea Gypsies (Moken, Moklen and Urak Lawoi), displays the very foundations of the interethnic relationships that characterize the region. The sharing of the territory and of the social roles distributed within the region are the core of the ritual cycle, which is thus the theater of Southern Thai’s ethnoregionalism.
