ABC of Brazilian Translations of James Joyce’s Ulysses
Abstract
Ulysses (1922), by James Joyce, is considered a particularly challenging work for translators, given the variety of styles, narrative techniques, and word games employed by the author. The three Brazilian translations so far published by Antônio Houaiss, Bernardina da Silveira Pinheiro, and Caetano Galindo illustrate the diversity of ways translation work can undertake, with different emphasis on values such as literality, reproduction of formal procedures and intelligibility by the reader, which the comparison of fragments of these translations undertaken here will allow us to glimpse.
