A supramolecular self-assembly framework has been formed via the interaction of symmetrical tetramethyl cucurbit[6]uril (TMeQ[6]) with catechol (G). Its structure was characterized using 1H NMR, X-ray single crystal diffraction, Fourier infrared spectroscopy and UV–vis spectroscopy. The spectral properties show that the compound is a triclinic system that crystallises in the P-1 space group. G does not enter the cavity of the host and the positive electrostatic potential outer surface of TMeQ[6] interacts with the benzene ring of G to form a 1:1 supramolecular self-assembly.
