This paper deals with the connections and stylistic divergences between the historiographic prose and the fictional one from the second half of the 16th century. It also pays attention to how style is taken under consideration in several paratexts. In particular, it analyzes how a new rhetoric orientation arises in the novohispanic prose, as well as the ideas about style that were present in chivalry and sentimental novels. This analysis allows us to propose the notion that a new kind of fiction is born by means of the influence of works like Lazarillo de Tormes and Viaje de Turquía. This new literary modality pretends to distance itself from the chivalric and the sentimental novel by assuming the rhetoric postulates of a set of historians whose ideas about style and veracity were very influent in the origins of the realistic romance.
