In a purpose to confirm the efficiency of Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for the diagnosis of lesions of the female dog mammary gland a study was conducted during a period of one year. 21 mastitis, 21 benign tumors and 17 malignant tumors were studied in 148 bitches, ranging from 3 to 17 years old. The histological examination was performed in most cases. The correlation between the results of the histological and the cytological examination was studied. The correlation between the results of the histological and the cytological examination was detected in 80% of all cases. The limitations of the FNAC are the false-positive cases. Since the diagnosis can not definitely diagnose, a surgical biopsy and histopathology should be done when there is a suspicion of clinically and not cytologically confirmed malignancy. In a clinical context, the method has much to offer by preventing bitches from suffering inappropriate surgeries and investigations and allowing surgeons to plan quickly and more rationally.
