A Comparative Assessment of Performance of Moisture Controllers for a Real Time Industrial Paper Machine Model

Industrial paper machines operate under stringent performance measures and there is a demand for efficient controllers. In this paper two advanced control algorithms— self-tuning deadbeat, and model predictive control (MPC) - for the real time model of an industrial paper machine moisture control problem are proposed. The time domain performance of the controllers is compared and tabulated for both servo and regulation problems. It is demonstrated through simulation that in the unconstrained case, the servo performance of deadbeat controller is found to be good. However, the performance of MPC under constrained conditions is much better than the deadbeat controller.
