The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional state and the lipid profile in children from seven to nine years old from Maringá/PR. The sample was composed by 130 children. The nutritional state was established by the body mass index (BMI) and the lipidic profile was determined by the total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The data were analyzed by the Student t-test for independent samples and by the chi-square (c²). According to BMI, 74.6% of the children were non-obese, 15.4% were overweight and 10% obese. High values of total cholesterol were observed in 55,4% of the sample and desirable in 18,5%. The HDL-cholesterol was lower than desirable in 26.9% of the children and 51.5% of non-obese presented hypercholesterolemia. Modified levels of triglycerides were verified in 10% and borderline in 20,8% of the children. Only 30% presented recommended limits in all the indicators. The results indicated that for the sample assessed, there was no significant association between nutritional status and lipid profile (P>0,05). Considering the findings of this study, it appears that changes in lipid profile in addition to being common among adults, are increasingly present in children, including those with adequate weight, indicating the need for promotion of educative measures that leads to the adoption of healthy life habits.
