doi: 10.12957/geouerj.2017.23479 With a view to further study the changes in the behavior of the process of water infiltration catchment basins of the Anil river and Grande river (Rio de Janeiro municipality), this paper proposes to develop a classification to assess, in comparative terms, the multi-temporal and spatial differences of potential infiltration due to the variable corresponding to the type of land cover. The methodology of classification and infiltration analysis of the potential on the watersheds was developed from four complementary stages: collection of bibliographic information and institutional data, grouping of classes of land cover, geoprocessing and fieldwork. With the results, it was possible to ratify what is happening in the catchment basins since the 70s, a period in which intensified the urbanization process in the Baixada de Jacarepaguá, which led to changes in the hydrological functioning, in particular the relative potential infiltration catchment basins between 1984 and 2001, from, for example, reducing the area with high potential 10.6% in the watershed of the Grande river and a reduction of 6.9% in the catchment basins of the Anil river due mainly to the increase of 4.8% and 6.2% of potential areas without the catchment basins, respectively.
