The issue of reasons of crime and crime prevention is still current and not yet fully analyzed. It has been linked to our perception of human nature. The aim of the article is to scrutinize the concept of Juliusz Makarewicz. He believed that a human being is defective, having low instincts, which are the main reason for bad behaviors. He perceived constant educational infl uences as well as being in touch with culture as an eff ective way of fi ghting against crime. He also believed that those factors are responsible for the good inclinations outbalancing the bad ones. He underlined that the whole society should to be involved in the convicts rehabilitation. Makarewicz’s conclusions seem to be current and helpful in fi ghting crime for practitioners, so they are worth reminding.
