Thyroid abscess is extremely rare, usually associated with an immunocompromised state, pre-existing thyroid diseases such as malignancy, or a branchial cyst. It is generally caused by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Here, we report a rare intrathyroid abscess in an immunocompetent patient with pre-existing multinodular goiter due to an uncommon causative agent Escherichia coli (E. coli). She was treated initially with intravenous antibiotics and supportive measures, later incision and drainage of the abscess, and right hemithyroidectomy.
